This Week in Dexter Class

This week in RE, we will be reintroduced to Imran who is a Muslim and follows the religion of Islam. We will be learning about his sacred book, The Qur’an, and how, like the Jewish sacred book, the Torah, it has some of the same stories as the Old Testament.
As we hear about The First Revelation (when the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) became a messenger for God) we will talk about messages and the many ways in which we send messages to each other such as letters, texts and emails.
This will be tied into our literacy, language and communication work, in which we will be reading Old MacDonald had a Phone' by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross. This book is a spin on the traditional song, but looks at the theme of appropriate use of technology. The children will be using the reading and writing skills to access shorter versions of the text and write their own text messages!
In maths, we will be focusing on measure and will start the week by comparing length and height, before moving on to measuring using non standard units for length (how many cubes long? etc) and developing our concept of time by seeing how many times we can complete different activities in a given time period. We will also be learning the order of the days of the week and will read Jasper's Beanstalk by Nick Butterworth to aid this.
We will welly walk on Wednesday, where we will return to comparative lengths using natural materials, and continue to hone our whittling skills.
In phonics, we will be consolidating our use of the sounds we have learned so far and will be using them to write short captions and sentences using capital letters.
