This week in Dexter Class
Autumn is finally upon us and the days are starting to get cooler so do remember your jumpers and coats this week! We will be continuing our seasonal Pumpkin theme and learning to orally retell the story Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper using a story map to support us. We will then box up the story into the beginning, middle and end and then we will continue with a guided reading activity where the children will match simple captions to the pictures from the story. We will discuss vocabulary and make a poster to help find the lost duck where we can practise our writing skills.
In Phonics we will be completing our Phase 2 teaching with the sounds l, ss and ll. We will then be moving into some consolidation and assessment of the Phase 2 sounds before moving into Phase 3 after the half term break. We will be doing lots of reading practise to make sure that all children are secure with the sounds taught so far and are reading books consistent with the teaching. Please continue to hear your child read daily.
In our Maths we are starting a new journey looking at recognising, representing and composing the numbers 1,2 and 3. Our Mastery approach ensures that children gain early mathematical knowledge which is essential to build confidence in maths and encourages the development of problem solving skills. We use maths resources which help children explore mathematics in engaging and inspiring ways and encourage the development of the core maths skills that make up the early years curriculum. We are committed to helping to develop mathematical thinking and language to help cement their learning and, through collaboration, contribute to their general education and social progress.
In Expressive Arts and Design we will look at the Japanese Artist Yayoi Kasuma and using our 'Super power of looking' to talk about her spotty pumpkin art works before going on to complete 2D and then 3D artwork using mark making skills and working with clay.
In between all of this we will be using our new daily planner to discuss days of the week, months of the year, seasons and daily weather. We will have PE, music and relaxation sessions and we are hosting our Open Morning on Thursday where Dexter class will get the opportunity to show off their classroom and learning environment. Please remember to tell any friends with younger children to come and visit us!
